WILHELM BLECKMANN: Formations/Deformations

From San Diego to Redding, Bleckmann has traveled the roads of California, capturing images of native oak trees along the way. These trees provide ample visual intrigue, with striking twisted forms and gnarled, textured surfaces. Bleckmann accentuates these qualities with careful attention to light and shadow, unusual vantage points and superb detail. The effect is often anthropomorphic, with tree limbs evoking the rhythms and gestures of the human form. In some works, Bleckmann adventurously delves into pattern by mirroring the image in a kaleidoscope fashion. These works are reminiscent of mandalas in their formal symmetry, with lacey filigrees of intertwining branches.
