GWEN SAMUEL: Stitches
•
Printed on transparency sheets, Samuels
utilizes repetition of imagery to create striking visual patterns. Multiple
prints are sewn together by hand, like patchwork quilts, forming compound
images that hang unframed on the wall. From a distance, these works function
as abstract paintings. Upon closer inspection, images begin to reveal their
content while the stitches holding them together add an element of time, craft
and intimacy. As a photographer, Samuels has created a way to incorporate
the touch of her hands in each work, allowing the photographs to become unique
objects of expression. In this exhibition, works feature subjects observed
by the artist on a recent trip to India and those closer to home. Fragmented
compositions reveal prayer flags, architecture and the urban landscape of
Los Angeles.
Gwen Samuels is a Los Angeles based artist. Her work has been represented
in numerous group exhibitions in Southern California and nationally. Originally
from New York, Samuels attended Syracuse University, where she earned a BFA
in textile design. Her work has been published in several books and is included
in notable private collections.
